About Brenbeal

Brenbeal Childcare Centre is located on the lands of the Wurundjeri people from the Woi wurrung clan  Brenbeal is a Woi wurrung (Wurundjeri) and Boonwurrung word which means rainbow. The name was adopted in 1993 when the centre opened as a 35 place long day care centre with a sessional kindergarten.

The building and grounds are owned by the City of Maribyrnong. The staff are employed by the Management Committee who consist of parent volunteers. They meet monthly and are responsible for making management decisions.

Over the years the demand for sessional kindergarten has decreased while the demand for day care has increased. 2017 was the last year the centre offered session kindergarten. From 2018 the centre offers a fully intergrated kindergarten program.

In 2017 the centre adopted new names for the rooms for the centre. The names were chosen by staff and endorsed by the Wurundjeri Land Council. They approved using the following Wurundjeri words as  names for each of the Centre’s rooms: Wallert (Possum), Bunjil (Eagle), Bullen Bullen (Lyrebird) and Barriamal (Emu).
